| Mission Communicable
Arts, Inc. is a not-for-profit company established on
artistic collaboration between people of multiple disciplines
and backgrounds in order to create and promote innovative
work that supports our belief that art is current, kinetic
and connective. These commitments have lead Communicable
Arts, Inc. toward projects which recontextualize existing
pieces or foster original works that deal with the here
and now of the creators, as well as the communities
in which the work is presented. Our intent is for all
those who come in contact with these projects to become
a participant in the artistic event. Communicable Arts
wishes to further these goals by supporting all manner
of creative expression that is intended to communicate.
Summer Shakespeare Project
The goal of our Summer Shakespeare
Project is to annually produce a work of Shakespeare
to be presented in neighborhood parks through collaboration
with local parks departments and other area not-for-profits
that use the park as a venue.
We strive to create relevant public
theatre in public places as part of our mission to produce
works that deal with the here and now of the creators,
as well as the communities in which the work is presented.
All of our Shakespeare productions, remain faithful
to the text and spirit of the play, while incorporating
a contemporary flare- updating the dress and manner
of the characters- to create a bridge of relevance that
serves contemporary audiences.
Communicable Arts provides this programming
free of charge to organizations and free of charge to
their audiences to promote the idea that theatre belongs
in all communities as a public amenity. We choose performance
sites that are central to communities, composed of people
from different backgrounds and where a project like
this would be welcomed.
Each play is accompanied by
a youth workshop. We expect our audience to be of all
ages and backgrounds, and we will welcome any and all
of them to the workshops, but realistically the workshops
accommodate ages 6-16. These workshops allow audience
members to engage with Shakespeare’s text through
activities meant to demystify the sometimes daunting
language of the Bard. The workshops help bring the language
into contemporary context and speech, thereby changing
a seemingly foreign art form into the familiar.
